I was a pupil of Mike’s at Morley Memorial Primary School in the 1950s. I went to his retirement ‘do’ in the 1980s but then lost touch until about 10 years ago when i was organising a class reunion. I was given Mike’s contact details and he jumped at the chance to come. We organised a 90th birthday party for him and he continued to come to our meals until quite recently. Latterly he became quite frail and spent a lot of time in hospital but he remained cheerful. His lifelong love of aircraft was reflected in his funeral service, culminating in us walking out of the service to 633 Squadron, followed by a fly-past over the Crematorium. He would have loved that.
